The Principal Laser/Optical Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, manufacture, and test of complex EO/IR passive and active optical systems and/or subsystems operating in the UV/Vis/IR regions under stressing military and aerospace environments. Active systems include bulk and fiber, solid state lasers and non-linear optical devices. Passive systems include IR detectors and focal plane arrays.
The position works closely with other engineers, program and subcontract management, and suppliers to define and analyze candidate subsystem performance specifications and to ensure responsiveness to operational requirements. The position analyzes cost vs. system performance and conducts trades and assessments of technical approach and risk to ensure maximum cost effectiveness and optimal system design.
The position will direct the day to day work of junior engineers and technicians. As part of this oversight, the candidate shall be capable of providing coaching and mentoring in order to develop the skills of the less experienced engineers. The position may be responsible for defining and implementing special tooling, test equipment, and facility capital requirements in support of program needs and/or business strategy.

Required Education:
Bachelors and 8+ year(s) related experience
Required Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering or similar technical degree or equivalent experience,Employees in California must have a Bachelor?s degree in the applicable field, or an applicable certification, equivalent certificate or any required license. Equivalent experience will not be considered.
Required Skills:
1. BS Physics, Optics, or Electrical Engineering or related field 2. Eight (8) years of hands-on experience in laser engineering and/or electro-optical product development, integration, and testing 3. A track record of fielded system designs for military and aerospace environments, and familiarity with structured design processes 4. Working knowledge of lasers 5. Experience in optical system performance analysis 6. Working knowledge of optical design techniques and tools 7. Excellent communication skills 8. Working knowledge of IR detectors 9. Experience leading multi-faceted design projects which may contain technical, financial, and/or schedule challenges 10. Familiarity with other engineering disciplines such as mechanical, thermal, and electrical and their interaction with optical systems
Preferred Skills:
1. MS or PhD in Optics, Electrical Engineering or Physics 2. Working knowledge of IR/EO protection systems 3. Specific design experience with infrared lasers and laser based sources (1-12 microns) including frequency converters 4. Specification, testing, and integration of infrared (1-12 microns) sensors and focal plane arrays. 5. Hands on optical test, alignment, and measurement experience 6. Optical fiber specification and handling (cleaving, splicing, etc.) experience 7. Computational skills applicable to optical/laser modeling
