DUTIES:

ddle align=center>Work Schedule: Monday - Friday - 3:30PM - 12:00 AM (2nd Shift)

The Maintenance Mechanic position will be located at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) Manchester, NH. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Providing maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and installation support for the plumbing, heating, and cooling systems throughout the medical center;

ddle> Installing, modifying, troubleshooting, and repairing systems including but not limited to: condensers, chillers, air handlers, compressed air, humidifiers, filters, refrigerators, and freezers;

ddle> Maintaining, repairing, and installing plumbing systems including but not limited to: high/low pressure piping, sanitary sewers, steam heat and generation, circulating, vacuum and condensate pumps, expansion tanks, radiators, lavatories, commodes, and water heaters;

ddle> Working from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to pan and layout routing of piping, vents, wiring, refrigeration lines, ductwork, and valves;

ddle> Reading and understanding technical manuals and instructions for air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, as well as gas and oil fired boilers and furnaces;

ddle> Estimating labor and materials costs and preparing lists of materials for the completion of jobs;

ddle> Using hand and power tools such as multi-meters, diagnostic equipment, air velocity meters, flue gas analyzers, grinders, pipe threading machines, pipe cutters, oxy-acetylene torches, refrigeration gauges, and motorized drain cleaners;

ddle> Monitoring, manipulating, and troubleshooting energy management control systems (EMCS) such as Johnson Controls, Teletrol, and Trane Tracers with computer based troubleshooting equipment;

ddle> Creating leak-free joints in piping and tubing systems using the appropriate method such as solder, silver solder, Teflon sealant, and compression fittings;

ddle> Adhering to safety regulations, maintaining tools and equipment, and ensuring the safety of co-workers, employees, patients, and the general public while performing tasks;

ddle> Performing related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

For this position, the job element method is used to match what you (the applicant) can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT - SCREEN-0UT: This position requires possession of a Universal Technician Certification (UTC). Supporting documentation is requested.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT - SCREEN-OUT: This position requires possession of a gas fitter license. Supporting documentation is requested.

You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

Physical effort and work conditions:

Work is performed while standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, or working with hands overhead. There is work requiring lifting and carrying of up to 50 pounds. In addition, it is sometimes necessary to work in cramped quarters, in small openings, on stepladders, in areas with dust, dirt, extreme heat or cold, and in unventilated areas. The maintenance mechanic is subject to the hazards of working near energized steam lines, electrical lines,as well as hazards when working with power and hand tools.

ddle>The Maintenance Mechanic must be alert and must exert concentration in maintaining and repairing the various pieces of equipment and appliances. Employee must be able to determine the cause of malfunctions and take the necessary steps to correct them in order to insure proper operations.

ddle>Employee is required to stand on his/her feet for long periods of time, crawl, stoop, climb ladders, work in close quarters and in inclement weather as required to access the various utility systems. He/she may be required to lift up to 50 pounds and is occasionally exposed to electrical hazards, pressurized steam, asbestos, mold, etc

ddle>Employee will be proficient in Confine Space Entry procedures as needed to access the medical center s utility systems. Employee will also utilize ladders, scissor lifts, boom lifts, and fall protection equipment as required.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Applicants will be ranked based on three quality groups, as follows:

* Best Qualified - applicants possessing knowledge, skills and abilities that substantially exceed the minimum qualifications of the position and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
* Well Qualified - applicants possessing knowledge, skills and abilities that exceed the minimum qualification of the position and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
* Qualified - applicants possessing knowledge, skills and abilities that meet the minimum qualifications of the position.

After the vacancy announcement closes, reviewed applications are evaluated against the questionnaire responses and placed in the appropriate quality group. Qualified veterans will be afforded preference by being placed at the top of the appropriate quality group. Qualifying veterans with a service-connected disability of 10% or more will be placed at the top of the best-qualified group.
