Job Description

PURPOSE:

Performs a variety of complex electrical work such as installing, maintaining, repairing, adjusting and troubleshooting a wide variety of electrical equipment. Also performs local oversight of contractors and coordinates in-house skilled trades during construction and maintenance projects.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Works from blueprints, sketches, and manufacturer's equipment/schematic diagrams to design and plan the sequence of operations to carry out complex wiring and equipment installations, maintenance and troubleshooting of industrial electrical equipment such as: boilers and boiler room support equipment and controls, chillers, air compressors, test chambers, computer-controlled building management system components and sensors, HVAC controls, electronic frequency converters, electronic variable speed drives, emergency power systems, fire and security systems, and other similar types of equipment. Interfaces with design engineers and service technicians when installing, modifying, and enhancing operations of equipment and completing construction projects may be required to work with or direct contractor personnel when performing this task.
  2. Install, troubleshoot and maintain complex electrical equipment such as microprocessor- based controllers and sensors, security systems, air compressors, vacuum pumps, and variable pitch vane air handling units. Other equipment could include variable speed AC/DC drives, acid exhaust scrubbers, chillers, boilers, deionized water systems, waste water pumps, and air conditioning units. Site power distribution systems, 400 cycle power systems, and specialty power equipment could also be involved. Provide the programming and control circuitry necessary for a complete installation on any or all of these systems or equipment.
  3. Determines distribution system requirements, calculates circuits sizing required to support equipment and rearrangements, and provides the electrical service. Designs and installs grounding systems as required. Design's modifications and interconnections to existing equipment controls as required.
  4. Determines routing locations and methods for installing power panels, circuits, conduit, wires, electrical equipment, fixtures, controls, and accessories. Selects and orders materials from supplies, and recommends substitutes when items are not available, or when economically practical.
  5. Performs preventative maintenance, repairs, and calibration for industrial equipment to minimize down time and unscheduled outages. Inspects and checks circuits for continuity and proper functioning. Recommends better utilization and maintenance of plant equipment to avoid or minimize unscheduled outages.
  6. Troubleshoots, repairs, rebuilds, and modifies defective, damaged, or inoperative electrical equipment and components. Isolates source of difficulty when troubleshooting, and uses ingenuity to repair or rig temporary hook-ups as required to minimize down time.
  7. Interfaces with contract service and design engineers on inspections, improvements and enhancements for the operation of complex systems such as but not limited to gas detection systems, security systems, building management systems, fire protection systems. etc.
  8. Designs and installs electrical safety systems, which support the life, safety and health of company employees.
  9. May perform backup duties of maintaining inspecting and making repairs to the microprocessor-based building management system.
  10. Designs, recommends, and implements modifications to existing control systems, making use of existing sensors and upgrades to provide accurate control of building conditions. Recommends modifications to conserve energy and extend the life of plant equipment.
  11. Monitors, collects, and analyzes signal data to control building conditions and operations, and to implement adjustments, corrective actions, calibrations, improvements to existing controls and programs, as required. These control systems may at times need to be accessed remotely.
  12. Performs all duties in accordance with applicable State, Federal, and Laws
